Η Βρετανική Ακαδημία Κινηματογράφου και Τηλεόρασης έδωσε τα δικά της βραβεία, τα BAFTA Awards, τα πιο σημαντικά κινηματογραφικά βραβεία της Ευρώπης.
Ο Κέισι Αφλεκ απέσπασε το βραβείο BAFTA καλύτερου ηθοποιού για την ερμηνεία του στην ταινία «Manchester by the Sea», κατά τη διάρκεια της τελετής απονομής των βραβείων της Βρετανικής Ακαδημίας Κινηματογράφου στο Royal Albert Hall του Λονδίνου. Υποψήφιοι για το βραβείο ήταν οι Ράιαν Γκόσλινγκ (La La Land), ‘Αντριου Γκάρφιλντ (Αντιρρησίας Συνείδησης), Τζέικ Τζίλενχαλ (Nocturnal Animals) και Βίγκο Μόρτενσεν (Captain Fantastic).

Στο δράμα «Manchester by the Sea» του Κένεθ Λόνεργκαν, ο Κέισι Άφλεκ υποδύεται έναν άντρα τον Λι Τσάντλερ που μετά τον θάνατο του αδελφού του, αναγκάζεται να αναλάβει την κηδεμονία του έφηβου ανιψιού του.
Ο Λι Τσάντλερ είναι ένας τραχύς και βίαιος άνδρας. Όταν ο αδελφός του πεθαίνει, ο Λι αναγκάζεται να επιστρέψει στην γενέτειρά του και να αναλάβει την επιμέλεια του ανιψιού του. Είναι μια αλλαγή που θα τον αναγκάσει να αντιμετωπίσει τη μεγάλη τραγωδία που τον κάνει δυστυχισμένο.
Στην αρχή, ο θεατής δεν καταλαβαίνει γιατί ο Λι δεν μπορεί να αναλάβει την επιμέλεια του νεαρού. Αλλά σταδιακά, χάρη σε μια σειρά από φλάσμπακ, ο σκηνοθέτης Κένεθ Λόνεργκαν, μας αποκαλύπτει το τρομερό παρελθόν αυτού του χαρακτήρα.

H αμερικανίδα ηθοποιός ‘Εμα Στόουν κέρδισε το BAFTA καλύτερης ηθοποιού για την ερμηνεία της στο ρομαντικό μιούζικαλ «La La Land» του Ντάμιεν Σαζέλ. Υποψήφιες για το βραβείο ήταν οι Μέριλ Στριπ (“Florence Foster Jenkins”), Νάταλι Πόρτμαν (“Jackie”), ‘Ειμι Ανταμς (“Arrival”) και ‘Εμιλι Μπλαντ (“Το κορίτσι του τρένου”).
